Tyler J. Myers: With #ALDALE2024 wrapped up, it's time to start reflecting on the 50-year celebration of #ALDep. Some exciting things from this year: It was incredible to see Tuomo Suntola open the conference to a completely packed house with a talk on the beginnings of ALD. The field has come a long way from the original ZnS TFEL displays, but the wonder of manipulating matter on the atomic scale has only been amplified in the past 50 years. The types of companies exhibiting are becoming incredibly diverse and the industry landscape is changing rapidly. The number of equipment companies is astounding. Commodity companies are beginning to fill some interesting niches. What it means to be part of the ALD ecosystem is shifting and companies are becoming more flexible with how they operate inside this ecosystem. The manufacturing session was dominated by talks on spatial ALD. The double-whammy of speed and sustainability will keep driving the development of these systems for many companies, especially those working in energy storage applications. 2D materials were making a big splash with the very exciting goal of 2D CFETs outlined by Ivo Raaijmakers in his plenary session. There are plenty of challenges with fabricating these materials and doing ALD on them I expect to see a lot of interesting work on this topic in the future. Area-Selective Deposition continues to be a hot topic, and at the center of Annelies Delabie's ALD Innovator Award Talk, "To Grow or Not To Grow." More and more equipment suppliers are dabbling with ASD in their tools. Chipmetrics has even come out with a new ASD test chip featuring three separate growth surfaces. The outlook for the ALD world is clear - there's plenty of more room to grow!

R&D Scientist on our Semiconductor team, Sara Harris, dominating the final day of hashtag#ALDALE2024 with an excellent talk on our catalyzed AlN hashtag#ALDep process for power and resonator applications. Sara showed our ability to turn turn thermal AlN processes on & off with a catalyst, and its ability to coat porous and complex substrates with aspect ratios as high as 30:1, a feat unachievable with conventional plasma AlN processes.

Sara also gave a poster on doping SiO2 films with phosphite to increase the conductivity of proton exchange membranes. 

We will still be in the exhibition until the end of the conference for any last minute chats at Booth #42. Hope to see you one last time in Helsinki!
